Rising Spring Energy

I love this time of year! Spring has finally arrived. My woods are full of green leaves and wild flowers. People are coming out of the winter doldrums to work on projects with new vigor.

What is waiting to burst forth in your life this spring? This is the time to balance the Wood element with a few simple acupressure points at the ribs and the feet. As you hold these points gently for two minutes, think about the things you wish to accomplish and devise a plan to take action and complete your goals.

I’ve been making lots of To Do lists to accomplish my goals. There are many projects and events happening this year. I discovered some creative bullet journal prompts to motivate me to keep on track.

Spring also brings fresh  foods back to the market. I’m buying local when I can.  I’m also focusing on eating as many healing foods as possible. Here are some great cucumber rolls to try.  Or try some healing cardamom in your chai tea!

Spring brings new routines. How about trying these tips for 30 days to a healthier you?  Many of the tips are consistent with the Be Well Decks (Balance Resource Cards) that I created to help my Breast Cancer patients make healthy lifestyle changes and prevent  the return of their cancer. What are the things you do to be well?

Spring can also bring stress to our lives with all the projects and opportunities available. What are you doing to keep your stress levels  in balance? This interesting article suggests showing compassion to others through service is a great way to feel good and reduce stress. Daily meditation is also a great way to slow down the pace.  Create space to breathe in your day.  Take a breath. Be present in the moment.

What if you held the key to your own health?

For years I have felt a sense of dis-ease within myself. I struggled with weight gain, dissatisfaction with my body image and discomfort with hormonal changes. Keeping up with my peers in yoga class was difficult, so just stopped going. I felt tired or restless most of the time, but couldn’t sleep well at night. There was no energy for creativity or self care with the demands of raising children, working and other responsibilities. I was emotionally exhausted, physically limited and spiritually drained.

I wanted to reboot my body, mind and spirit but wasn’t sure where to start.

I turned to self-help books on wellness, therapy and bodywork. I met with a fitness trainer, a spiritual director and a nutritionist. There were too many experts sharing advice on how to be healthy, but most of those ideas did not seem to work for me on a long term basis. During a six week unplanned sabbatical following surgery, I finally had a chance to slow down and listen to my inner wisdom. I began to trust that I could make wise choices with the tools I collected over the years, but this time, I listened to how my body, mind and spirit responded to the combination of those tools. I made a commitment to self care based on my own inner wisdom. I began the slow healing journey back to optimal health and well-being.

Self Care begins with an awareness of what you need for your own well-being.

Self care is a commitment to YOU first. That is the most important step on your wellness journey. Self care means paying attention to your body, mind and spirit on a regular basis and trusting that you know on some deep level what you need for your own well-being.

Most of us have tried a variety of approaches to wellness. When one area of our life gets in balance, another area seems to fall apart. That’s because we focus only on one area at a time, such as our physical body or our emotional response or a spiritual practice. We forget to look at the whole picture of wellness. Your body, mind and spirit are interconnected and need to be addressed as a whole. You can take charge of your own health and find simple ways to start on the road to better health by addressing all these areas simultaneously. Everything is connected. You have choices. It’s time to bring your whole self back into balance and listen to your inner wisdom.

As I work with clients on their overall wellness, I have found that there are a variety of resources to balance the body, mind and spirit. I want to share some of these self care techniques with you on a regular basis through my wellness newsletter and blog. You get to choose the ones that work best for where you are right now in your quest for wellness. The important thing is to start with the easy things that can help you take those first few steps towards health and wellness.

Balance cards spread

I created two unique decks of wellness resources with my top 64 self care tips, called Balance Resource Cards. These cards are designed to be tangible ways to balance your body, mind and spirit. The two decks of 36 cards each (32 wellness tips and 4 instructional cards) come in a folded envelope tied in a gold or platinum elastic bow. This allows for an abundant supply of tips that you can choose from each day as personal wellness practices. Each card is designed to provide practical self care tips related to health and wellness.

The cards are simple enough that most people can use the resources to bring balance to their body, mind and spirit. They range from simple breathing techniques to restorative yoga poses to spiritual practices such as gratitude and forgiveness. The cards can help you create your own unique plan to small-step your way to healthy living. You can simply choose a card at random from the deck or pull several cards to practice for the week. If something doesn’t work for you that day, put it back in the deck and pull another card. Keep a deck at home and the second deck at work or beside your computer. Display the cards in a decorative bowl or business card holder where you see them regularly as self accountability. You have choices and can create the perfect wellness routine that works for you.

The power of words

words 2012Each year I try to choose a theme word to help me focus on my goals. In 2012, my theme was Self Care. It encompasses a number of other words as well. I created this word cloud poem with various supporting words.

When I take time to name the things I want in my life, those things happen.

As newlyweds, my husband and I wrote goals for one year, five year and ten years as a way to focus on what we wanted to accomplish as a couple. We noticed that we would meet most of these goals long before the projected time frame. We started reviewing these goals every 1 to 2 years and revising them as needed, since we seemed to be ahead of schedule.

When we decided to look for a new home, we each made a list of things we wanted to find in a new location. We then made a combined list of things that were non-negotiable (such as an attached garage and a basement) as well as a “wish list” of things that would be nice to have (like extra property and space for ceramics) but not crucial for our decision. We posted that list on our refrigerator. It was very helpful when we met with the realtor. Within a few months, we moved into our current home that had everything from the first list and almost all the things from the wish list. Naming what we wanted in a house helped us find our dream home.

When we had children, we didn’t always take time to review our written goals yearly, but they were always there in the back of our minds, guiding our decision making. The long-term goal list became more general with themes of hospitality, service and involvement in our children’s lives. The short term goal list often morphed into “To Do” lists of home repairs, vacation plans or events to attend. Our mantra was “Let’s put it on the calendar, or it won’t happen.” You can track our goals through the calendar during those early parenting years.

At this stage in our life, I like to simplify things. I like the idea of choosing a word or phrase for the year as an overall theme.  Balance. Simplicity. Hygge. Breathe. Self care. These overarching themes keep me focused on what is important.

Words guide our decisions.

10 shadow 3As I meet with clients for their bodywork sessions, I discover that helping them speak their goals out loud during the session can have a profound impact on their health and well-being. One person wants to feel calm or relaxed, while then next person wants to be energized or motivated. Sometimes my clients want to feel peaceful, centered, hopeful or open to new possibilities. They name these goals out loud during the session, then relax as I release held tension. I perform the same basic Zero Balancing protocol with them, but they often leave the session feeling the very thing they asked for at the beginning of the session. That is the power of the mind.

Our words become a self fulfilling prophesy.

Some people name this phenomena of the self fulfilling prophesy as “the law of attraction” or “the power of positive thinking.” Regardless of what you call it, when we speak our words out loud, our mind hears those words and unconsciously begins to align what choices we make with those thoughts. Deep down at the cellular level, our body begins to respond to what we think. This works for both positive and negative thoughts. If we are “sick and tired” of something, our physical body soon begins to feel sick and tired. If we are “happy and excited” about an event, it usually goes smoothly and exceeds our expectations. I try to educate my clients on the importance of positive thoughts because of this concept.

What are the things you desire in your life? What things do you want to accomplish? How do you want to feel? What direction are you headed in life? I hope you can take time right now and name a few things that are important in your life. Speak them out loud. Write them down and post where you can see them.

Words have power. Use them wisely.
